SOUNDBITE: (English) Matthew Ciccone, Traveller from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania: "I suppose it''s harder to feel a sense of control over the standards someplace outside the United States with regards to personal privacy issues. But, I think that, without knowing too much about it I think that once again, being confident about having good security would alleviate certain issues of privacy." 4. SOUNDBITE: (English) Kioko Kibua, Traveller from Orlando, Florida: "I mean there''s going to be some backlash to it. There has to be some backlash, right. In this day and age it''s very hard to predict who''s going to do this kind of thing. So, we just have to be careful of everybody, I guess." 5. SOUNDBITE: (English) Suzie Craig, Traveller from Seattle, Washington: "You know I have a biased view because I''m old. So, I don''t think, it doesn''t concern me. I don''t think too many people are looking. Let''s put it that way." 6. Group of people having picture taken O''Hare Airport, Chicago, Illinois 7. Passengers preparing for security in terminal 8. SOUNDBITE: (English) Debbie Borman, Traveller from Chicago Illinois: "I feel like they''re not doing, the governments are not doing a really great job at the front end, finding people who really are trying to do something to other people. Whereas all the rest of us are just going to visit friends and going to visit family. We''re not doing anything. It''s so invasive, possibly to the point of unconstitutional." 11. At Reagan National Airport, which serves Washington, where Congress is now talking about (m) millions of US dollars for individual body scan image security devices, most passengers had no problem with the increased surveillance. Even though the image is often called a virtual "strip search," some passengers said they are willing to put up with the inconvenience if it finally means security while flying. In Chicago, the opinion was similar, although one woman said she thought governments should be doing more intelligence work in order to prevent potential attacks. Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab, the Nigerian accused of trying to ignite explosives aboard a Northwest Airlines jet as it was coming in for a landing in Detroit, did not go through such a scan where his flight began, at Amsterdam''s Schiphol airport. On Wednesday, a couple of the high-tech security scanners were demonstrated near Reagan National Airport in Arlington, Virginia. Transportation Safety Agency (TSA) officials tested the "backscatter" machine, which uses low-level X-rays to create a two-dimensional image of the body, from Rapiscan Systems, a unit of OSI Systems Inc. They also tested the "millimeter wave" machine, which uses radio waves to produce a three-dimensional image based on energy reflected back from the body.
